Free Ongoing Activities in Des Moines

  • Did you know that admission to the Des Moines Art Center is always free?  
  • There is also free admission to the Pappajohn Sculpture Garden in downtown Des Moines.
  • The State Historical Building also has free admission, with lots of great permanent exhibits, as well as rotating traveling exhibits throughout the year.
  • The Jordan House in West Des Moines was the site of an underground railroad station.  It's $3 for adults, $1 for children, but there is an open house on Sunday, May 2 from 2-5 pm with free admission for all.
  • Farmers Markets are starting all over the central Iowa area.  Check out Adel on Saturdays 8:30 to 11 am
  • Altoona Fridays 4-7 pm;
  • Ames Downtown Thursdays 4-7 pm, Saturdays 8-1; North Grand (Ames) Wednesdays 3-6, Saturdays 8-12; Reiman Gardens (Ames) Wednesdays 4-7 pm
  • Ankeny Saturdays 8-12
  • Boone Thursdays 3-6 pm
  • Capitol Hill (DSM) Tuesdays 5:30-7:30 pm; Drake (DSM) Wednesdays 4-7 pm; East Side (DSM) Tuesdays 3-6 pm; East Village (DSM) Fridays 4:30-7:30 pm; Ingersoll (DSM) Tuesdays 4-6 pm
  • Indianola Thursdays 6:30-9 pm
  • Johnston Tuesdays 3-7 pm
